Families use Interactive Kiosks to visitor prisoners.

When a parent is sentenced to a term in a correctional facility, and is sent 3 to 4 hours drive away, this can lead to a break down with the family unit. Now inmates can actually stay in touch with their families using interactive kiosks and videophones.

Now parents can see their children grow up and the children can see their parent, no matter if it is impossible for them to visit, making the miles separation disappear.

A medium security prison in Indiana is piloting this project, as it has been documented in a few studies that this type of interaction with the family whilst being incarcerated reduces the re-offending rate, once released.

So family and friends can communicate from the comfort of their own home, all that is needed is a web cam. The visits are charged at $12.50 for 30 minutes which is more cost effective than driving 3 hours or even a local call for 30 minutes.

These visiting calls can be scheduled for any time to fit in with the family “back home”, rather than the normal 9-3 visiting times making it a win-win situation.

Whether you agree or not, this does prove that digital signage is here to stay, prisons also use LCD enclosures to protect the televisions from potential damage, these are used indoors, rather than in digital outdoor signage solutions.
